Matt Williamson is a math tutoring business owner and consultant to martial arts schools in Tampa, Florida. He’s been actively involved in business, math, and martial arts for a while now, and now he wants to help all the martial arts schools across the world surpass their goals. He has lofty aspirations!

Since he was a kid, he has continuously studied martial arts. He’s sampled a lot of styles, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Wing Chun, Judo, Aikido, and even Capoeira. However, the one he really loves is northern style Kung Fu. Specifically, My Jhong Law Horn.

He’s run his math tutoring business in the Tampa area since 2006, which is about the time he graduated from the University of South Florida with a dual bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics. In 2006, as soon as he graduated, he had a choice between buying a math tutoring business, or buying a house.

Knowing nothing about business, he bought it from the owner. He’s never looked back or regretted the decision.

Since Matt dived into the business head-first knowing nothing about business, his first goal was to learn everything about business possible. He knew about the tutoring. He didn’t know about business. What’s worse, he didn’t know what he didn’t know. He didn’t even know enough to ask the right questions (sound familiar?).

So he studied. And he tried everything he could think of. Then he studied more. And he thought.

Then one day, he doubled his students. Then he had record months. The old owner didn’t have months like those. He had record months in December. His summers grew.

Above all, students were learning (and enjoying!) math.

One day, a friend from his old kung fu school emailed. He was laid off a few months ago so he started a kung fu school in his area. Matt started helping him with business and he realized that his friend knew nothing about business, just like Matt when he started!

That’s when Matt decided to start this blog and this business.

You know how to kick (or throw!) and how to teach. That’s what your karate/kung fu/tae kwon do/whatever teacher is for.
